Winter Sportz buying guide · updated 9 October 2026

Quick answer

For your first days on snow you need skis, ski boots and poles (rent them), plus a helmet, goggles, a waterproof jacket and pants, warm layers, gloves and one pair of ski socks. Beginner skis and ski + binding sets in our shop start at €239.

The beginner ski checklist

  • Skis, boots and poles (rent at first)
  • Helmet (EN 1077 certified)
  • Goggles with an S1–S2 or photochromic lens
  • Waterproof ski jacket and ski pants
  • Base layer and mid layer (no cotton)
  • Gloves or mittens, a neck warmer and one pair of thin ski socks
  • Sun cream and lip balm: the sun is stronger at altitude

Rent or buy?

Rent skis and boots for your first few days, then buy boots first: they matter most for comfort and control. Buy your own skis once you ski a week or more each winter. Helmets, goggles and clothing are worth owning from day one.

Choosing your first skis

Look for a soft, forgiving all-mountain ski under 90 mm underfoot, about 15–20 cm shorter than your height, or a ski + binding set. Browse skis for beginners and the ski size chart.

Boots matter most

A boot that fits makes every ski easier. Read our ski boot fitting guide before you buy.

Stay safe on the slopes

  • Ski in control and at a speed that suits your ability
  • The skier below you has priority
  • Don't stop where people above can't see you
  • Wear a helmet and take lessons in your first season

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to what skiers ask us most. Still unsure? Ask us.

What should a beginner skier buy first?

A helmet and goggles, then good clothing. Rent skis and boots at first; when you start skiing every winter, buy boots first and skis second.

How much do beginner skis cost?

Beginner skis and ski + binding sets in our shop start at €239. Add a binding and mounting if your skis come without one.

Can I learn to ski as an adult?

Yes. Most adults link their first turns within a few days with lessons. Choose soft, short skis and well-fitting boots to make it easier.
