What to wear skiing

Stay warm and dry all day with three layers and the right accessories.

Winter Sportz buying guide · updated 9 October 2026

Quick answer

Wear three layers: a thin base layer of merino or synthetic fabric (never cotton), a warm mid layer such as fleece or light down, and a waterproof, breathable jacket and pants. Add one pair of thin ski socks, gloves or mittens, a neck warmer, a helmet and goggles.

Base layer

Close-fitting merino wool or synthetic top and leggings that move sweat away from your skin. Cotton stays wet and makes you cold.

Mid layer

A fleece, wool jumper or light down or synthetic insulated jacket. Add or remove it depending on the temperature.

Outer layer

A waterproof and breathable ski jacket and pants or bibs. A waterproof rating of 10,000 mm or more keeps you dry in snow; vents help on warm days.

Head, eyes, hands and feet

  • A certified helmet and goggles that fit together: see the ski goggles guide
  • Mittens are warmer than gloves on very cold days
  • One pair of thin ski socks: thick or double socks cut circulation and make feet colder
